Tuesday Tips for Parents/Guardians and Grandparents

March 3, 2026

Good evening all.

You may have heard some talk recently in the media about new data published by the ESRI which proves  the importance of  regular daily school attendance for economic and health outcomes later in life. Some important observations have  arisen as a result of studies done over many years.  Please read these below.

Key findings include the following

  • Chronic absence at ages nine and 13 is predictive of lower educational qualifications and poorer wellbeing in early adulthood.
  • Even short absences of one to two days can lead to lower Leaving Certificate grades, with chronic absence significantly affecting performance.
  • The report emphasises the need to address school absence, especially given the increased challenges since the COVID19 pandemic, as it can lead to longterm inequalities in educational attainment and social connectedness.

Ever fancied learning a couple of words and phrases in the Irish language, to impress your teenager and friends ?  Seachtain na Gaelige or week of the Irish language is held  annually during the build up to St Patricks Day March 17th. The end of the week culminates in a Cheile or set dancing in the school hall. We would like to  especially invite parents to our Irish language workshop for an hour on Wednesday 11th of March. It will be run by Ms MC Glinchy and it should be a bit of fun. Beginners are warmly welcomed and anyone who is fluent in the language , it would be great to have you there too. Santry Community Garden- for all budding gardeners

Mercy Beaumont are organising  a guided tour of  the Santry Community Garden  after the Easter holidays on a Saturday in early April for our parents and guardians. The dates will be put to you in a whatsApp poll for parents/guardians to decide . This will be a great opportunity for you to see the garden, get gardening tips and join the garden’s group. The community garden is a 4 acre Victorian Walled Garden situated on the grounds of Santry Desmesne in Santry Village. The Santry Community Garden Group was formed in 2010 and since then have completely transformed the plot turning it into a wonderful amenity for the whole neighborhood , providing training, tea and lots of laughs for visitors and members. Please follow the link for further information about the gardens. They are also running an  event for International Day on March 8th especially for all us women. Details can be found on their instagram and facebook page. I am told by Marian from the community gardens that there will be  a cookery workshop and plenty of laughs on the day. You don’t have to be a member to join in. And by the way they are always looking for new members!
